| The
incorporation of Quantitative Ultrasound into routine clinical practice is an important
and widely debated topic. We know that QUS provides comparable prediction of hip fracture
but poorer precision than achieved with conventional X-ray densitometry. Due to its lower
cost and portability, there is an inherent attractiveness for placing QUS in the Primary
Care and local Obstetric/Gynaecology sector. There is also evidence to suggest that
although QUS is not a direct surrogate for conventional densitometry, QUS provides a
superior means of identifying subjects who should be referred for conventional
densitometry than currently achieved with lifestyle and medical risk factors.
Noting that the FDA has now approved
several commercial systems, this evidence-based review concludes with best practice
recommendations for the clinical implementation of QUS. |
