| Editor's Research Activities Christian Langton studied for his BSc
in Physics and Chemistry at Hull University, and MSc in Medical Physics at Aberdeen
University before returning to Hull University to study for his PhD, awarded in 1984
titled 'Measurement of Broadband Ultrasonic Attenuation in Cancellous Bone'.
Following two years in
industry, developing the BUA technique with Walker Sonix, he returned to academia, with
Lectureships in Applied Physics at City of London Polytechnic and Sheffield Hallam
University. In 1992, he was appointed Director of the Health Research Centre at Sheffield.
In 1994, he again returned to Hull University, as the Senior Lecturer in Medical Physics
within the School of Medicine, Faculty of Health.
Dr Langton has maintained an
active research interest in the ultrasonic assessment of osteoporosis, serving on three
European Community Research Management Committees, for the latest, being the co-ordinator
for a European consensus on the clinical role of ultrasound in osteoporosis. He has
patented the CUBA ultrasonic bone analyser, commercially developed by McCue plc,
Winchester, UK and a novel electronic calibration phantom for BUA. Dr Langton was awarded
the IPSM Manufacturers Award for 1995-96 in recognition of his
contribution to scientific and technical developments applied to Clinical Practice.
Current research projects
include:
Þ Ultrasonic
Characterisation of Cancellous Bone and
Osteoporosis
Þ Health Economics of Bone Densitometry
Þ Stochastic
Simulation of Remodelling and Osteoporosis
Þ Fractal Properties of Cancellous Bone Structure
